Market Coordinator

Reports to:          Food Manager

Location:             Orangeville, ON

Salary Range:     $23.00 an hour – 20 hrs a week

Contract Date:     12-month duration 

 

The Orangeville Food Bank and Dufferin Food Share is a not-for-profit agency dedicated to supporting dignified, no-cost food support to those in need. We offer both perishable and non-perishable food through in-person shopping and deliveries, reclaim food from local grocery stores, operate a community kitchen program, and support local agencies with a monthly food share. We also pursue proactive solutions designed to end hunger through advocacy and by supporting local farmers to improve the local food system.

About the Neighbours Community Market

The Neighbours Community Market is designed as a revenue neutral ‘Pay What You Can’ farmers market style pop-up that travels throughout Dufferin County. This mobile market offers fresh fruits and vegetables available on a sliding scale to ensure that community members have access to nutritious food.

Job Function

The Market Coordinator is responsible for managing three market sites in Orangeville, Shelburne, and Grand Valley. This role serves as the primary point of contact for customers and must represent the Orangeville Food Bank and Dufferin Food Share in a positive and professional manner. The Market Coordinator oversees the organization of produce inventory, market setup, and breakdown, ensuring an engaging and welcoming experience for all market visitors.

 Specific responsibilities:  

  • Set up a visually appealing and organized display of fresh produce and other various items at each market locations. 

  • Pack and load produce in the vehicle before each market and return unsold items to cold storage after the market.

  • Manage stock rotation and maintain organized produce inventory at the food bank.

  • Gather customer feedback and provide reports to the food manager regarding produce ordering and market produce ordering needs.

  • Ensure compliance with food safety and health regulations

  • Educate consumers on the sliding scale market model and how they can support the Foodbank’s initiatives.

  • Serve as a public facing representative of the Orangeville Food Bank and Dufferin Food Share, fostering a welcoming atmosphere.

  • Collaborate with staff to promote the market through social media, print materials, and other outreach efforts.

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge and Work Experience:

  • Knowledge of community-based food programs, food insecurity issues, and working with marginalized populations.

  • Strong organization, time management, and prioritization skills

  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively as part of a team

  • Experience in Customer Service is an asset

  • Comfortable using technology

  • Possess a sense of humour and a positive, upbeat personality, with liberal sprinkling of sunshine

  • Comfortable and confident with driving an 18’ refrigerated van. 

  • Experience in customer service or public engagement preferred

  • Food safety handling knowledge and certification preferred

  • Ability to understand and comply with Food Bank Canada’s Safe Food Handling Practices & Procedures.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Strong organization and project management skills

  • Ability to give clear written and verbal instructions

  • Demonstrate tact and diplomacy when working with diverse populations

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a natural conversationalist

Working Conditions:

Must be able to:

  • Perform moderate to heavy physical labor (lift up to 50 lbs. regularly)

  • Push/pull a pallet jack at 1200 lbs for 200 ft.

  • Climb a step ladder

  • Be exposed to cold temps and work in a regulated refrigerated environment occasionally

  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Obtain a Police Check

  • Maintain a current and valid driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract

Mon-Fri: 9:00am – 4:30pm

Small non-perishable items may be dropped into a bin at any participating Grocery Store (bins are a mix of wood & various store-provided bins).
